What to know about TB testing – and how Indigo makes it easy
Tuberculosis (TB) testing often lands in the category of “things you don’t think about until you need it,” but it’s a common part of work and life. Whether you need a TB test for work, school, a routine screening requirement – or because you may have been exposed to TB – it’s an important step in protecting your health and those around you.
But finding the time to get tested (and get results) can feel like a hassle. That’s where Indigo Urgent Care can make a big difference. With convenient access and quick turnaround times, TB testing at Indigo is designed to fit easily into your busy schedule.
What is a TB test?
A TB test checks whether your body has been exposed to the bacteria that cause tuberculosis – a contagious disease that spreads through the air during close, prolonged contact and most often affects the lungs. TB can become serious if left untreated.
Testing helps identify TB exposure early, including infections that may be present in the body, before symptoms develop or the infection can spread to others.
There are two main types of TB tests, and they work in slightly different ways:
- TB skin test (TST): A small amount of testing fluid is injected just under the skin of your forearm. A provider checks the area 48-72 hours later to see if there’s a reaction.
- TB blood test (interferon-gamma release assay, or IGRA): A small sample of your blood is used to measure how your immune system responds to TB-specific proteins.
At Indigo, we offer the QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT) blood test, making tuberculosis screening simple and convenient.
TB in the U.S. today
Tuberculosis is uncommon in our neck of the world, but it hasn’t gone away. In recent years, the U.S. has reported roughly 8,000-10,000 TB cases annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most are linked to past exposure rather than recent transmission.
Who needs a TB test?
There are several reasons you may need a TB test. The most common include:
- Starting a new job, especially in health care, childcare or education
- Enrolling in a school or training program
- Meeting workplace or volunteer requirements
- Immigration or visa-related health screenings
- Known or possible exposure to someone with active TB
- Certain health conditions or medications that affect your immune system
- Travel to areas where TB is more common
Even if you feel well, testing helps ensure early detection and a healthier environment for everyone.
Fast fact: Most people exposed to TB never develop active disease – but testing helps catch exposure early.
Why choose a TB blood test over a skin test?
A TB blood test is the preferred option for many types of tuberculosis screening for several reasons:
- One visit and you’re done. Unlike the two-step TST, you only need a single blood draw.
- Works even if you’ve had the BCG vaccination. A TB blood test helps reduce the chance of a false-positive result linked to prior vaccination.
- Clear, lab-based results. Your sample is analyzed in a local laboratory, providing objective results without relying on visual interpretation of skin reactions.
- More accurate screening. TB blood tests are generally more specific than skin tests, helping reduce both false positives and unnecessary follow-up testing.
- Fast turnaround. Results are typically available via your electronic health record within a few days.
What should I expect during a TB test at Indigo?
At Indigo, you don’t need to wait for an appointment – just walk in to one of our 45+ locations, book a same-day or next-day visit online, or choose a time that works for you. If you search for “TB testing near me,” Indigo makes it easy to find a location that fits your schedule.
Here’s what your visit will look like:
- We’ll collect some basic information, including your ID and insurance (if applicable)
- You’ll meet with an Indigo clinician, who will ask a few quick questions about your health history
- A small blood sample is drawn from your arm.
That’s it. Most visits take just a few minutes, and no return appointment is needed. Your sample will be sent to a local lab, and results are typically available through your electronic health record within 1-3 business days.
How should I prepare for my TB test (and what should I bring)?

If you’re not sure what documentation you need, your Indigo care team can help.
Are there any side effects of a TB test?
Side effects from a TB blood test are minimal. You may notice mild soreness or a small bruise at the blood draw site, but these symptoms don’t last long and will go away on their own.
What if I test positive?
A positive TB blood test doesn’t necessarily mean you’re sick or contagious. It means your body has been exposed to TB bacteria at some point.
If your result is positive, your clinician may recommend additional testing to determine next steps. Your Indigo care team will guide you through the process and help you understand your results.
