Allergies, Cold or COVID-19: How to detect the difference

Worried about that tickle in your throat or feeling more tired than usual? With the overlap of cold and flu season, springtime allergies and the spread of COVID-19, it may be difficult to determine whether your symptoms are typical for this time of year or signs of something more serious.

Knowing the difference between conditions can put your mind at ease and help you determine next steps. Despite your diagnosis, it is recommended that you practice social distancing and frequent handwashing to reduce the risk of spreading illness.

Use this handy chart to find your symptoms and identify what may be causing them.

What to do if you have COVID-19 symptoms

If you have upper respiratory symptoms (cough, fever, shortness of breath) and believe you need to be evaluated for COVID-19 -- call first before visiting a hospital, medical clinic or urgent care.

You can also take a quick online assessment using Indigo Urgent Care’s  Coronavirus Assessment Tool, or have an e-Visit with an Indigo Online Care provider to determine your risk and whether you need to be referred to a testing site.

What to do if you have cold or flu symptoms

Fortunately, most mild cold and flu symptoms can be treated at home. Over-the-counter pain and fever relievers, cough medicines and nasal sprays for congestion can help ease your symptoms.

Be sure to get extra rest and drink plenty of water and clear liquids, such as broth or decaffeinated tea. If you have a sore throat, gargling with warm salt water can help relieve the pain.

If your symptoms are not improving or seem to be getting worse, visit your neighborhood Indigo Urgent Care. Our medical providers can evaluate your symptoms and get you on the road to feeling better.

What to do if you have allergy symptoms

Seasonal allergy symptoms can be similar to a cold. Sneezing and congestion are common. You may also have red, itchy eyes or a scratchy throat.

Over-the-counter medications such as antihistamines or decongestants may provide some relief. If those don’t work and allergies are keeping you up at night or causing discomfort, visit your local Indigo. We can help!
